Port Loko is the headquarters of the eponymous district in Sierra Leone's Northern Province and sits on a tributary of the Sierra Leone River, about 80 kilometers north-east of Freetown. The historic port near the Rokel estuary was, from the 18th century onward, an important transshipment point for slaves, kola, rice, and palm oil in the trade between the Temne, Susu, Mandingo, and European merchants. In the 19th century Port Loko became a central inland base for the British administration and the venue of several major treaties between local chiefs and the Crown. Today the town is an administrative, educational, and transport center, home to Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology, a state university founded in 2018, along with numerous secondary schools, a government hospital, and a busy market. Its location on the main road to the Lungi Peninsula and Lungi International Airport makes Port Loko an important hub for travelers heading to or from the capital.
