Getting there
Reached by driving along unpaved rural routes in the northern region of Sierra Leone. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is usually necessary to negotiate the rough dirt tracks approaching the hills.
Best season
The lengthy dry season is without a doubt the most favorable time to plan a hike. The rainy season causes the unpaved approach roads to become dangerously slick and practically impassable.
Terrain & paths
The terrain involves rolling elevations covered in typical savanna grass and scrub woodland. The hiking trails are informal, created by locals, and can feature moderately steep, uneven segments.
What to bring
Carry an abundant supply of water, as the exertion in the heat will cause rapid dehydration. Sturdy hiking boots and reliable sun protection are also fundamental for this completely exposed environment.
Parking
Vehicles are generally left at the edges of the closest rural farming communities. It is polite and practical to request a local resident to watch the vehicle while you are exploring.
Safety
Keep an eye out for loose rocks during the ascent and be mindful of your hydration levels. Traveling with a local guide ensures you stay on the safest paths and avoid getting lost in the bush.
Time needed
Hiking to the summit of the hills and returning to the base usually requires around three to four hours. This has plenty of time to enjoy the sweeping panoramic views of the plains below.
