Fadugu is a small town in Koinadugu District in Sierra Leone's Northern Province, lying about 50 kilometers south-west of Kabala along the main road between Makeni and the highlands. The town is the headquarters of Kasonko chiefdom and a transition node between the low rice floodplains of Bombali and the upland savanna of Koinadugu. Fadugu is best known as an important market center: its weekly market is one of the largest livestock fairs in northern Sierra Leone, where Fula herders coming down from the upland pastures meet Mandingo traders and Susu and Limba farmers to trade cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. Trade in rice, groundnuts, dried fish, and manufactured goods also makes Fadugu an economic hub. The town has several schools, a health center, several mosques and churches, and small hotels and guesthouses for travelers heading to Kabala or Bumbuna. During the civil war Fadugu was contested for its strategic location but was rebuilt after 2002.
