Pančevo is situated at the confluence of the Tamiš and Danube rivers in the southern Banat region, just 18 kilometers northeast of Belgrade. The city has a long history of settlement dating back to the Neolithic period, but it gained significant strategic importance during the Austro-Hungarian period as a border town. Pančevo is renowned for its industrial heritage, housing the oldest brewery in the Balkans, founded in 1722 and later owned by the famous Weifert family. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the city transformed into a major industrial hub, particularly in the fields of oil refining, chemical production, and aircraft manufacturing (Utva). Architectural landmarks include the Church of the Holy Resurrection with its iconic twin bell towers and the nearby Vojlovica Monastery, which dates back to the late 14th century. Today, Pančevo serves as the administrative center of the South Banat District, balancing its heavy industrial identity with its role as a regional cultural and economic center.
