Šabac is a historically significant city in western Serbia, located on the right bank of the Sava River in the Mačva District. The city's development began with a fortress built in 1471 by the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus to counter the Ottoman expansion. Due to its strategic riverfront position, Šabac was a frequent battlefield between the Ottoman, Austrian, and Hungarian empires. During the early 19th century, under the leadership of Jevrem Obrenović, it became a pioneer of modernization in Serbia, earning the nickname 'Little Paris' for introducing the country's first piano, glass windows, and modern pharmacy. Today, Šabac is a vital industrial hub with a strong chemical industry and an important river port. Geographically, the city sits in a fertile plain, serving as a key transportation link between Belgrade and the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. The town is also famous for its bustling bohemian history, traditional music, and the massive annual Šabac Fair, which attracts visitors from all over the Balkans.
