Tronoša Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

Tronoša Monastery is a prominent Orthodox sanctuary located in western Serbia, near the town of Loznica in the Jadar Valley. Tradition holds that the monastery was founded around 1317 by King Stefan Dragutin and his wife Catherine of Hungary. After being destroyed by the Ottomans in the late 15th century, the current church was rebuilt in 1559 in the Raška architectural style. The monastery holds a unique place in Serbian cultural history as the site where Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, the great reformer of the Serbian language, received his early education in the 19th century. For centuries, Tronoša was a vital center for manuscript copying and transcription, helping preserve Christian literature during the Ottoman period. A notable local tradition involves the 'ploughmen's candles' (Ratarske sveće), massive beeswax candles donated annually on Maundy Thursday by local villagers. Surrounded by dense forests, the monastery complex also features a chapel and a fountain dedicated to the nine Jugović brothers, iconic heroes from Serbian epic poetry.
