Sremska Mitrovica is a historic city in the Srem region of Vojvodina, situated on the left bank of the Sava River. The city sits atop the ruins of ancient Sirmium, which served as one of the four capitals of the Roman Empire during the Tetrarchy in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. During this era, Sirmium was a major political and military hub, seeing the birth or residence of several Roman emperors, including Aurelian, Probus, and Gratian. Modern visitors can explore the Imperial Palace complex, now preserved under a protective structure, showcasing intricate mosaics and Roman engineering. The city's current name is derived from Saint Demetrius, who was martyred here in 304 AD. After the Ottoman withdrawal, the city became part of the Habsburg Military Frontier, leading to the construction of its elegant Baroque and Neoclassical town center. Today, Sremska Mitrovica is a significant industrial center for food and wood processing, located near the southern slopes of the Fruška Gora National Park.
