Krušedol Monastery (Serbia)

Weather…

Krušedol Monastery is widely regarded as the most significant of the sixteen Orthodox monasteries on Mount Fruška Gora in Vojvodina. Founded between 1509 and 1514 by the Branković family, the last Serbian despots, it was established by Đorđe Branković (later Archbishop Maksim) and his mother, Saint Angelina. The monastery functioned as a mausoleum for the dynasty and later became the seat of the Metropolitanate of Karlovci, making it the spiritual heart of Serbs living within the Habsburg Monarchy. Architecturally, the monastery combines medieval Serbian traditions with Baroque elements added during 18th-century renovations, most notably in its facade and bell tower. The main church is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin and houses exquisite 16th-century frescoes and a grand iconostasis. Krušedol serves as a historical pantheon, holding the tombs of many prominent Serbian figures, including King Milan Obrenović and Duchess Ljubica Obrenović. Despite being set on fire by retreating Ottomans in 1716, the monastery was rebuilt and continues to be a symbol of national resilience.
