Kikinda is a city in northeastern Serbia, located in the Banat region near the border with Romania. The city gained worldwide fame in 1996 when the nearly complete skeleton of a mammoth (Mammuthus meridionalis) was discovered in a local clay pit, estimated to be about 500,000 years old. Named 'Kika,' this mammoth has become the city's icon and is displayed in the National Museum of Kikinda. Another unique feature is the city's ecological status as the world's largest wintering ground for long-eared owls (Asio otus); hundreds of these birds gather annually in the trees of the city center. Culturally, Kikinda is renowned for the 'Terra' International Sculpture Symposium, where artists have been creating monumental terracotta sculptures from local clay since 1982. The city features well-preserved neoclassical architecture and a grid-like street layout typical of 18th-century planned settlements in the region.
