Lompoul sand plain (Senegal)

Weather…

The Lompoul sand plain is an extraordinary desert landscape in northwestern Senegal, located roughly halfway between Dakar and Saint-Louis. The relief is characterized by majestic orange sand dunes that can reach heights of up to 40 to 50 meters, forming a sharp contrast with the surrounding savanna landscape. Geologically, it is a relic of a drier epoch when the Sahara extended further south, stabilized by sparse vegetation at its fringes. The plain covers an area of only about 18 square kilometers, making it a compact but visually striking desert enclave. The sand is extremely fine and rich in quartz, giving it a glowing appearance at sunset. Despite the arid conditions, there is occasional access to shallow groundwater in the swales between the dunes, enabling the survival of some hardy plant species. Historically, the area was sparsely populated but today serves as a major destination for ecotourism and features insights into the dynamics of coastal dune formation. The region is a significant example of the transition between marine influences and aeolian sedimentation processes.
