Ferlo Plateau (Senegal)

Weather…

The Ferlo Plateau is a vast, semi-arid region in north-central Senegal, occupying about one-third of the national territory. This plateau is part of the Sahelian belt and is characterized by sparse vegetation consisting of thorny acacias and seasonal grasses. The climate is defined by extreme dryness and very high temperatures, with water available only through deep boreholes or during the brief rainy season. Geologically, the plateau consists of sandy and clayey soils that are used for extensive livestock farming by nomadic Fulani pastoralists. Two large nature reserves, Ferlo-Nord and Ferlo-Sud, were established to protect the remaining wildlife, such as the Mhorr gazelle. In recent decades, the plateau has become a focus for national reforestation projects under the 'Great Green Wall' initiative to halt desertification. Despite the harsh conditions, the Ferlo Plateau remains an ecologically significant area for stabilizing the Sahelian environment and supporting traditional pastoral cultures.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching the vast central plateau usually requires a sturdy 4x4 vehicle, starting from regional hubs like Tambacounda or Touba. The road infrastructure is extremely limited, consisting mostly of sandy and dusty tracks.
📅
Best season
The cooler dry season, spanning from December to February, is generally the most comfortable time to traverse the dry savannas. The intense heat of the later dry season and the mud of the rainy season make travel difficult.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is characterized by endless, extremely flat, and dry savanna plains punctuated by sparse vegetation. Navigating this vast and monotonous terrain can be challenging without proper local knowledge and GPS.
🎒
What to bring
It is absolutely essential to pack an abundant supply of drinking water, extra vehicle fuel, robust sun protection, lightweight cotton clothing, and reliable navigation equipment due to the sheer remoteness of the area.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is entirely informal across the vast, open plains. When stopping near the scattered nomadic settlements or temporary camps, visitors should always respectfully ask for local permission before leaving their vehicles.
⚠️
Safety
The primary risks involve the extreme heat and the genuine danger of becoming lost in the featureless landscape. Traveling with a knowledgeable local guide and ensuring your vehicle is in excellent condition are paramount.
⏱️
Time needed
A thorough expedition across this extensive plateau typically takes several days of driving. Visitors usually plan for a minimum of two to three days to safely cross and appreciate the stark beauty of the dry savanna.
