Rwinkwavu is a historic site in the Kayonza district of Rwanda's Eastern Province. The town was once the center of Rwandan mining, especially tin and tungsten mining, operated by Belgian colonial companies. The Rwinkwavu Hospital, originally built for the miners and their families, is now an important district hospital, renovated and operated by the NGO Partners In Health in collaboration with the Rwandan government. It is a model for high-quality healthcare in rural areas. After the decline of mining, the economy shifted to agriculture and livestock farming. The old mines and colonial architecture are reminiscent of the region's industrial past. The proximity to Akagera National Park also has tourist potential.
