Enisala Fortress (Romania)

Weather…

Enisala Fortress, also known as Heracleea, is a medieval military stronghold located in Dobruja, perched on a limestone hill overlooking Lake Razim. It was built in the late 13th or early 14th century, most likely by Genoese merchants or Byzantine forces, to control the vital trade routes connecting the Black Sea to the Danube. After the Ottoman Empire conquered the region in the 15th century, the fortress served as a garrison but eventually lost its strategic significance as the sea retreated and the Razim lagoon silted up, turning into a closed lake. The fortress's military architecture is distinguished by its massive limestone walls and unique polygonal defensive towers that remain remarkably intact. Archaeological excavations have revealed layers of human settlement dating back to the Iron Age and Roman periods. Today, Enisala stands as the only medieval fortress in Dobruja that has preserved its original structure, offering visitors spectacular views of the vast water expanses of the Razim and Babadag lakes.
