Histria (Romania)

Weather…

Histria, located on the shores of Lake Sinoe near the Black Sea coast, is the oldest recorded urban settlement in present-day Romania. Established around 657 BC by Greek colonists from Miletus, the city quickly grew into a thriving commercial hub connecting the Hellenic world with the local Geto-Dacian tribes. The settlement enjoyed continuous habitation for over 1,300 years, spanning from the Greek Archaic and Classical periods through the Roman and early Byzantine eras. Archaeological highlights include the ruins of temples dedicated to Zeus and Aphrodite, massive Roman fortification walls, and a monumental episcopal palace from the Christian period. Histria was the first city on modern Romanian territory to mint its own silver currency, underscoring its significant economic influence in antiquity. The city was finally abandoned in the 7th century AD after the silting of the lagoon blocked maritime access and left the population vulnerable to nomadic raids. Today, the site features a comprehensive museum housing Greek pottery, sculptures, and inscriptions that document the region's rich multicultural history.
