Vaser Valley Railway (Mocănița) (Romania)

Weather…

The Vaser Valley Railway, popularly known as Mocănița, is the last remaining active forestry steam railway in Europe. Built in 1932 with a narrow gauge of 760 millimeters, the line stretches for approximately 60 kilometers starting from Vișeu de Sus into the Maramureș Mountains. The railway was designed to transport timber from the inaccessible Carpathian forests, following the narrow and winding path of the Vaser River. It crosses numerous bridges and tunnels, reaching remote areas near the Ukrainian border where no roads exist. While still used for logging operations during the week, it has gained international fame as a heritage railway, utilizing restored steam locomotives for passenger excursions. The technical significance of this line lies in its continuous operation since the early 20th century, preserving an industrial landscape that has vanished elsewhere on the continent.
