Merry Cemetery of Săpânța (Romania)

Weather…

The Merry Cemetery (Cimitirul Vesel) in the village of Săpânța, Maramureș, is a unique burial site world-renowned for its colorful tombstones and unconventional attitude toward death. It was established in 1935 by local folk artist Stan Ioan Pătraș, who began carving intricate oak crosses painted in an animated shade of blue now known as 'Săpânța Blue.' Each cross features a naive painting depicting a scene from the deceased's life and a humorous or ironic poem written in the first person. These epitaphs honestly describe the person's character, profession, or even the circumstances of their death, reflecting a traditional belief in death as a joyful transition rather than a tragic end. Following Pătraș's death in 1977, his apprentice Dumitru Pop Tincu took over the tradition. Today, the cemetery functions as an open-air museum and is considered a masterpiece of Romanian folk art, drawing visitors from across the globe to admire its colorful rows of memory.
