Baia Mare, the capital of Maramureș County, is located in a scenic depression at the foot of the Gutâi Mountains along the Săsar River. Historically known for its rich deposits of gold, silver, and copper, the city has been a major mining hub since its first documentary mention in 1329. The heart of the city is the Old Center (Liberty Square), which features a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. Its most iconic structure is Stephen's Tower, a 15th-century Gothic bell tower standing 40 meters tall, built during the reign of John Hunyadi. Baia Mare gained international fame in the late 19th century through its Colony of Artists, a pioneering art school founded in 1896 that significantly influenced modern Central European painting. Today, the Art Museum preserves an extensive collection of works from this period. Following the decline of the mining industry in the post-communist era, Baia Mare has successfully pivoted towards furniture manufacturing, IT services, and sustainable tourism. The city serves as the gateway to the Maramureș region, famous for its UNESCO-protected wooden churches and preserved peasant lifestyles. The local Village Museum is a highlights for visitors, showcasing authentic peasant houses and intricate wooden gates from the four historical areas of Maramureș. Surrounded by pristine forests and volcanic peaks, Baia Mare features exceptional opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking to the Creasta Cocoșului (Cock's Comb) rock formation or skiing in nearby resorts. The annual Chestnut Festival is the city's signature event, celebrating local heritage and the vast edible chestnut forests surrounding the urban area. Romania's full Schengen accession on 1 January 2025 markedly improved transport links from Baia Mare towards Hungary and Central Europe.
