Curtea de Argeș Cathedral (Romania)

Weather…

The Curtea de Argeș Cathedral is a masterpiece of Romanian architecture, built by Prince Neagoe Basarab between 1512 and 1517. Located in the former capital of Wallachia, the cathedral is world-renowned for its elaborate ornamentation and distinctive twisted steeples. Its architectural style seamlessly blends Byzantine traditions with Oriental and Caucasian motifs, making it a unique landmark in the Orthodox world. The building is inextricably linked to the 'Legend of Master Manole,' a ballad describing the human sacrifice required to complete the construction. Since the late 19th century, the cathedral has served as the royal necropolis of Romania, housing the tombs of Kings Carol I, Ferdinand I, Carol II, and Michael I, along with their queens. The exterior is crafted from limestone and adorned with intricate reliefs featuring complex geometric and floral patterns. Between 1875 and 1885, the church underwent an extensive restoration led by French architect André Lecomte du Noüy, which shaped its current majestic appearance.
