Ruins of Panamá Viejo (Panama)

Weather…

Panamá Viejo contains the archaeological remains of the original Panama City, founded on August 15, 1519, by Pedro Arias Dávila. As the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas, it served as a vital strategic base for the conquest of the Inca Empire and the transshipment of Peruvian gold and silver. The city flourished as a major administrative and religious center for over 150 years until it was brutally attacked and destroyed by the English privateer Henry Morgan on January 28, 1671. Today, visitors can walk through the haunting ruins of the cathedral, various convents, and the town hall. The iconic tower of the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is the site's most recognizable landmark, standing as a testament to its former glory. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997, Panamá Viejo is complemented by a modern on-site museum detailing its colonial history. The ruins provide a unique window into the early Spanish colonial ambitions in the New World.
