Banana Plantation near Baru (Panama)

Weather…

The banana plantations in the Barú region (Puerto Armuelles) in Chiriquí province are historically the most important engine of the Panamanian agricultural economy. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, the United Fruit Company (later Chiquita Brands) established a huge empire here that shaped the infrastructure of the entire region, including its own railways and ports. The hot, humid climate and fertile soils near the Costa Rican border are handy for banana plants. Although the industry experienced severe crises due to labor strikes, plant diseases ('Panama disease'), and the withdrawal of large corporations in the early 2000s, the sector is currently experiencing a strong comeback thanks to new investments and disease-resistant varieties (like Cavendish).
