Shah Jahan Mosque, Thatta (Pakistan)

Weather…

The Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta is an outstanding example of mature Mughal architecture, built between 1644 and 1647. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the construction as a token of gratitude for the hospitality shown by the people of Sindh during his exile. Unlike many other Mughal mosques made of red sandstone, this mosque is constructed almost entirely of red bricks. The architecture is notable for its 93 domes, arranged to create exceptional acoustics where the Imam's voice can be heard throughout the complex without technical assistance. The walls are decorated with magnificent blue and white tile mosaics (Kashi-kari), featuring geometric and floral patterns that reflect influences from Central Asia. The courtyard and extensive corridors provide a cool and serene atmosphere, perfectly adapted to the hot climate of the region. Today, the mosque is considered one of the most valuable architectural achievements of the Islamic world in Pakistan.
