The prison was built in 1882 by the British colonial administration and was once a site of oppression where prominent Nigerian independence activists were incarcerated. In 2010, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Nigeria's independence, the grounds were transformed into a cultural park based on the designs of architect Theo Lawson. The facility integrates the ruins of the old prison walls into a modern design featuring green spaces, fountains, an open-air theater, and galleries. Today, the park serves as a lively hub for arts, music, and literature, symbolizing the transition from colonial captivity to national freedom.
