Cross River National Park (Nigeria)

Weather…

Cross River National Park is one of Africa’s richest biodiversity hotspots, preserving one of the last remaining primary rainforests in West Africa. Located in Cross River State along the border with Cameroon, the park is divided into two non-contiguous sectors: Oban and Okwangwo. Officially established in 1991, it covers an area of approximately 4,000 square kilometers. The park is world-renowned as a habitat for the critically endangered Cross River gorilla, of which only a few hundred remain in the wild. The landscape is defined by dense jungles, rugged mountains, and numerous pristine waterfalls. Because of its geographic isolation, the park hosts many endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. Cross River National Park is part of a transboundary protected area network and remains a critical focus for global conservation efforts.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from November to March is good, as trails in this vast primary forest are then passable. During the rainy season between June and October, many paths become impassable and wildlife viewing is challenging.
🌅
Best time of day
The best time for wildlife viewing is early morning, when forest dwellers are still active. Late afternoon hours also offer good chances, while midday is usually quiet.
📜
Etiquette
Always stay on marked trails to avoid damaging the sensitive forest floor. Avoid loud noises and leave no trash behind to preserve the pristine environment.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars help spot birds and mammals in the dense canopy. Sturdy footwear and rain gear are advisable due to unpredictable weather and damp ground.
🧭
Getting there
The park is remote and best accessed with a 4x4 vehicle. From Calabar, an unpaved road leads to the entrance; a guide is recommended for navigation.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife is often hard to spot due to dense vegetation; do not expect immediate sightings. Patient waiting at water sources or clearings can lead to unforgettable encounters.
