Adrar Bous (Niger)

Weather…

Adrar Bous is a prominent mountain massif in the northern Aïr Mountains of Niger, recognized as one of the most significant archaeological sites in the entire Sahara. The mountain rises approximately 300 meters above the surrounding Ténéré Desert and is primarily composed of durable granite rock. In the 1970s, researchers discovered extensive remains from the Epipaleolithic and Neolithic periods here, including skeletons of domesticated cattle. These findings vividly prove that around 6,000 years ago, the region was a wet savanna landscape that served as a habitat for hunter-gatherers and early pastoralists. Numerous prehistoric rock engravings in the vicinity depict animals such as elephants, giraffes, and antelopes, which have long since vanished from this desert region. Today, the massif is an integral part of the Aïr and Ténéré Natural Reserves, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering valuable insights into human evolution and climatic history.

Getting there
Reaching this profoundly isolated massif involves a rigorous multi-day 4x4 expedition across the open Ténéré desert, typically originating from the distant outpost of Agadez.
📅
Best season
Travel here is strictly advised during the coolest months between November and February, as summer temperatures in the surrounding desert climb to phenomenally dangerous levels.
