Weather…

Maasvlakte 2 is a monumental land reclamation project in western Rotterdam, located directly on the North Sea coast, which significantly expanded the Port of Rotterdam. Formally opened in 2013, the project added approximately 2,000 hectares of land to the port area to provide space for state-of-the-art container terminals and chemical industries. Geologically, it consists of artificially deposited sand dredged from the North Sea, secured through complex hydraulic engineering to withstand tides and storms. Historically, Maasvlakte 2 marks the transition toward fully automated port operations, with terminals here being among the most technologically advanced in the world. The ecological component was addressed through the creation of nature conservation areas and an artificial reef to protect the marine environment. Its strategic deep-water location allows the world's largest container ships to call at the port without tidal restrictions. Today, the area is not only an economic engine but also a site for research into sustainable port development and renewable energy.
