Gouda is a historic city located in the province of South Holland, situated at the confluence of the Hollandse IJssel and Gouwe rivers. First mentioned in 1139 and granted city rights in 1272, it became a prosperous center for trade, especially renowned for its production of cheese, clay pipes, and candles. The city's central market square is dominated by the iconic 15th-century Gothic Town Hall and the Weigh House where cheese has been traded for centuries. Another architectural treasure is the Sint-Janskerk, which at 123 meters is the longest church in the country, famous for its magnificent 16th-century stained-glass windows known as the Gouda Glass. Beyond its traditional industries, Gouda is also the birthplace of the stroopwafel, a popular Dutch syrup waffle that originated here in the late 18th century. Today, the city maintains its historic charm through its well-preserved canals and monuments while serving as an animated regional hub with a population of over 75,000 residents.
