Arnhem is the capital city of the province of Gelderland, strategically located on the banks of the Nederrijn river. The city is perhaps most widely known for its pivotal role during World War II, specifically the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944, which was a central part of Operation Market Garden. Today, the John Frost Bridge serves as a prominent memorial to the British paratroopers who fought to hold it against German forces. Arnhem has since been beautifully rebuilt and is now celebrated for its green spaces, being situated on the edge of the Veluwezoom National Park and housing the expansive Park Sonsbeek. It is also a significant center for fashion and the arts, hosting the ArtEZ University of the Arts. Visitors are often drawn to the Netherlands Open Air Museum, which showcases national history, and Burgers' Zoo, one of the most modern and largest zoos in Europe. With its blend of history and creativity, Arnhem remains a key cultural hub in the east.
