Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, beautifully situated on the southern bank of the river Waal near the German border. Its history spans over 2,000 years, dating back to Roman times when it was known as Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum and served as a crucial military stronghold. The city center features historical landmarks such as the 13th-century Stevenskerk and the remains of the Barbarossa ruins in Valkhof Park. During World War II, Nijmegen suffered extensive damage in 1944 due to an accidental Allied bombardment, but it was meticulously rebuilt in the following years. Today, it is a bustling university city, home to Radboud University and famous for hosting the annual 'Four Days Marches' (Vierdaagse), the world's largest walking event. The integration of ancient history, modern educational facilities, and a dynamic cultural scene makes Nijmegen a significant regional center within the province of Gelderland.
