Nampula Textile Factory
The textile industry in Nampula has a long and varied history, once serving as a symbol of industrial modernization in northern Mozambique. The Nampula region is traditionally the country's most important cotton-growing area, which facilitated the establishment of large-scale mills such as Texmoque. Production reached its peak in the 1980s when Nampula was the undisputed hub of Mozambican textile manufacturing. After a period of decline following the civil war and economic liberalization, efforts were made to revive the factories through privatization and foreign investment. Today, the sector focuses more on the primary processing of cotton (ginning) and the production of yarn for export. These textile facilities are not only key employers in the city of Nampula but also sustain the livelihoods of tens of thousands of cotton farmers throughout the province. Revitalizing this industry remains a central government goal to increase local value addition and reduce reliance on imported fabrics.
