💡 Tips
- The town has a strong Islamic heritage; dress modestly, especially when walking around the older neighborhoods and near mosques.
- Coastal trade historically shaped this city. Visit the old town to see remnants of Swahili and Portuguese colonial architecture.
- Transport is mainly by chapas (minibuses) and walking. The town is small enough to explore the center entirely on foot.
- The offshore islands (Primeiras and Segundas) are beautiful but difficult to reach; inquire locally for fishermen willing to take you.

Angoche, located on the coast of Nampula Province, is one of Mozambique's most storied cities, with a history spanning over 500 years. Formerly known as António Enes until 1976, the town was originally an influential Muslim sultanate and a vital hub in the Indian Ocean trade of gold, ivory, and slaves. The architecture of the old town reflects a blend of Swahili culture and Portuguese colonial rule, characterized by narrow streets and historic coral-stone buildings. Angoche is situated on a peninsula surrounded by an archipelago of small islands and mangrove forests, giving it a unique maritime character. Today, the local economy is primarily driven by fishing and cashew nut processing, with the port continuing to serve as a vital link for the community. While its commercial dominance has waned in favor of neighboring Nacala, Angoche remains a significant cultural heritage site with untapped tourism potential. The climate is humid tropical, pleasantly moderated by the prevailing sea breezes.
