Pljevlja is located in the far north of Montenegro, situated in the valley of the Ćehotina and Breznica rivers at an altitude of approximately 770 meters. The city has a long and multi-layered history, dating back to Roman times when it was known as Municipium S. During the Ottoman era, Pljevlja served as the administrative center of the Sanjak of Pljevlja, which left a lasting impact on the city's architecture and culture. Today, it is the economic hub of the region, primarily due to extensive coal mining operations and a large thermal power plant that provides a significant portion of Montenegro's electricity. Beyond its industrial role, Pljevlja features important cultural monuments such as the Husein-paša Mosque and the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, symbolizing centuries of peaceful coexistence between different faiths. The urban landscape is a blend of modern industrial structures and historic Ottoman influences. Despite its industrial focus, the surrounding area is characterized by mountains and natural scenery that hold potential for eco-tourism.
