Goražde is a strategically important city in eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated on the banks of the Drina River. The city has a long history dating back to Roman times and was a significant trading center in the Middle Ages on the route to Dubrovnik. During Ottoman rule, Goražde developed into an important administrative hub, reflected in the architecture of its old town. The city gained particular international recognition during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) as one of the few UN-protected enclaves in the east that successfully resisted siege. Goražde's industrial development is notable, especially in metal processing and the defense industry, earning it a reputation as an economic engine for the region. A cultural highlight is the bridge across the Drina, which stands as a symbol of resistance and reconstruction. Today, Goražde is a bustling center with educational and cultural institutions, hosting the annual International Friendship Festival. The natural environment gives opportunities for water sports on the Drina and hiking in the surrounding mountains.
