The Glassworks of Biot, located at the base of the namesake medieval village, is world-famous for its unique 'bubble glass' (Verre à bulles). This technique was developed in 1956 by Éloi Monod, who turned a perceived glassmaking flaw, tiny trapped air bubbles, into a coveted design feature. In the workshop, visitors can watch master glassblowers as they skillfully and forcefully shape glowing molten glass at extreme temperatures into artistic vases, glasses, and pitchers. Each piece is a handcrafted original, characterized by its sturdiness and distinctive bubbly texture. Biot has established itself as a 'City of Glass' thanks to this craft, attracting art enthusiasts from all over the world. The Verrerie de Biot also houses a gallery showcasing contemporary glass art, demonstrating how tradition and innovation coexist. The craft is preserved here as a living heritage, passed down through generations of artisans.
