Chișinău is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Moldova, centrally located along the banks of the Bîc River. First mentioned in historical documents in 1436, it was initially a monastic village within the Principality of Moldavia. The city’s significance grew dramatically after 1812, when it became the administrative capital of the Bessarabia Governorate under the Russian Empire. During World War II, Chișinău faced near-total destruction from military conflict and a major earthquake, leading to a large-scale reconstruction effort led by architect Alexey Shchusev in the post-war years. It is often referred to as the 'White City' because of the widespread use of local white limestone in its architectural landscape. Known for its abundant greenery, the city has numerous parks and lakes, with the Ștefan cel Mare Public Garden serving as its historic heart. Today, Chișinău is the nation's political, economic, and cultural hub, bridging historical traditions with modern European development.
