Curchi Monastery (Moldova)

Weather…

Curchi Monastery, located in the Orhei District, stands as one of the most significant and visually striking architectural landmarks in Moldova. Founded in 1773 by Iordache Curchi, the monastic complex underwent extensive expansion during the 19th century, resulting in a refined Baroque ensemble. The centerpiece, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Mother of God, was constructed between 1862 and 1872 and features a dome reaching 57 meters in height, modeled after St. Andrew's Church in Kyiv. During the Soviet era, the monastery was closed in 1958 and repurposed as a psychiatric hospital, leading to the deterioration of its historical frescoes and structures. Following the independence of Moldova, a comprehensive restoration project was launched in 2002 to return the site to its former ecclesiastical glory. Currently, it serves as a serene religious center located within the lush Codru forests, attracting both pilgrims and historians interested in Orthodox heritage.
