La Venta (Mexico)

Weather…

La Venta is one of the most significant archaeological sites of the Olmec civilization, located in the modern-day state of Tabasco in southeastern Mexico. Between 800 and 400 BC, it functioned as the premier ceremonial and political capital of Mesoamerica following the decline of San Lorenzo. The site is famous for its monumental architecture, most notably the Great Pyramid, which stands thirty-four meters tall and is regarded as one of the oldest pyramid structures in the Americas. Excavations here revealed four of the iconic Olmec colossal heads, along with numerous altars and intricate serpentine mosaic pavements buried as offerings. The city was strategically built on an island in a swampy region and demonstrates a precise north-south alignment along its central axis, reflecting early astronomical sophistication. Due to industrial oil activity nearby, many of the original monuments were relocated to the La Venta Museum-Park in Villahermosa for preservation. Today, it remains a cornerstone for understanding the 'mother culture' of Mesoamerican civilizations.
