San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán (Mexico)

Weather…

San Lorenzo Tenochtitlán is one of the oldest and most vital archaeological sites of the Olmec civilization, situated in the modern-day state of Veracruz in southeastern Mexico. The city reached its zenith between 1200 and 900 BC, widely regarded as the first true urban and political capital of Mesoamerica. The entire site was constructed atop a massive artificial plateau raised nearly fifty meters above the surrounding savanna, a testament to the Olmecs' advanced engineering skills. San Lorenzo is world-famous for the discovery of ten of the seventeen confirmed Olmec colossal heads, carved from massive basalt boulders transported from miles away. Beyond these sculptures, the city featured a sophisticated drainage system composed of interlocking stone troughs, which is among the earliest of its kind in the Americas. Around 900 BC, the city was mysteriously abandoned, with many of its monuments ritually defaced or buried beneath the earth. Today, it stands as a cornerstone for researching the birth of complex societies and monumental art in pre-Columbian Mexico.
