Reaching this hidden watering hole requires a very demanding multi-day off-road expedition deep into the remote, rocky desert canyons. Traveling with a highly experienced local guide and a robust, well-equipped 4x4 convoy is the only viable way to safely navigate the maze-like gorges.

Best season

It is strongly advised to schedule your visit during the much cooler winter period, spanning from November to February. Attempting this difficult journey during the brutal summer months exposes travelers to highly dangerous extreme heat trapped within the narrow canyon walls.

Terrain & paths

The approach involves hiking over uneven, rocky riverbeds and navigating through very steep, shaded canyon passages to reach the water. The ground is often covered in slippery stones and animal dung left by the many nomadic herds that utilize the natural guelta for drinking.

What to bring

Heavy-duty trekking boots with excellent grip are absolutely required to negotiate the slippery, uneven boulders safely. Since the sun can be intensely magnified by the rock walls before entering the shade, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and copious water supplies are mandatory.

Vehicles must be parked at a significant, safe distance from the guelta's immediate entrance to avoid disturbing the sensitive wildlife. The final approach to the water basin is always completed on foot to minimize noise and environmental impact in this incredibly fragile ecosystem.
