Ramla l-Hamra (Gozo)
Ramla l-Hamra, meaning 'Red Sands' in Maltese, is the largest and most renowned sandy beach on the island of Gozo and an ecologically vital protected area. The bay is famous for its spirited orange-red sand, a color derived from the high iron content in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. Behind the shore lies one of the last remaining intact sand dune ecosystems in the Maltese Islands, hosting specialized flora such as the sea holly and the sea daffodil. The Ramla Valley is also a fertile agricultural region supported by natural freshwater springs. Historically, the site is significant for the remains of a Roman villa and the legendary Calypso's Cave, which overlooks the bay from the cliffs above. Ramla Bay is part of the Natura 2000 network and is subject to strict environmental regulations to preserve the natural progression of the dunes and the rare invertebrates and birds that inhabit this unique coastal landscape.
