Schaanwald is a strategically significant district of the municipality of Mauren, located directly on the national border with Austria. Historically, the village developed along the long-distance road from Feldkirch to Buchs, which was used as an important Alpine pass as early as Roman times. Today, Schaanwald is primarily known as the site of the largest border crossing between the Principality and Austria, where thousands of commuters and freight shipments are processed daily. A striking feature is its own railway stop on the international ÖBB line, making Schaanwald an important hub for public transport. In addition to its transit function, the village has a high quality of living, positioned in the dense forests of the Maurerberg. With Casino Schaanwald, the town also hosts a regionally well-known leisure facility that contributes significantly to local tax revenue.
