Roman Estate Maurerberg (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The Roman Estate on Maurerberg in Mauren is one of Liechtenstein's most significant archaeological sites from the period of Roman settlement. It consists of the remains of a so-called Villa Rustica, a Roman farm estate that was operated between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. The site provides evidence of the early agricultural development of the Alpine Rhine Valley by the Romans. During excavations in the early 20th century, particularly around 1930, the foundations of several buildings were uncovered, some of which are still visible to visitors today. A particular highlight is the evidence of a hypocaust, an ancient Roman underfloor heating system, indicating a high standard of living for the inhabitants at the time. The strategic location on an elevation provided the Romans not only with protection from floods but also with a good overview of the trade routes in the valley. The site is now protected as a cultural monument and features, through informational panels, sound insights into the daily life and construction techniques of antiquity. It is a vital location for understanding the region's early history.
