Bendern Oath Square (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The Oath Square (Schwurplatz) in Bendern is one of the most historically significant locations in the Principality of Liechtenstein. On this site, on March 16, 1699, the subjects of the Lordship of Schellenberg swore an oath of allegiance to their new sovereign, Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein. This event marked the beginning of Liechtenstein's territorial sovereignty over the area now known as the Unterland and was a crucial step toward the formation of the modern state. The square is located on the historic Church Hill of Bendern, directly adjacent to the parish church. Today, a commemorative plaque marks this solemn occasion, during which approximately 700 men swore loyalty to the Prince. The choice of this location emphasized the church's role as the center of public life. For visitors, the Oath Square symbolizes the deep regional roots of Liechtensteiner history. Its understated design provides space for reflection on the nation's political evolution from the 17th century to the present day.
