The Cage, Montego Bay (Jamaica)

Weather…

The Cage is a small but historically significant structure located in the heart of Montego Bay at Sam Sharpe Square. Built in 1806, this sturdy whitewashed building of brick and stone served as a temporary lock-up for 'vagrants,' disorderly sailors, and runaway slaves. Its name originates from an earlier wooden structure that looked like a cage, which was replaced by this more permanent masonry building. During the height of the plantation era, a bell at the top of The Cage was rung at 9:00 PM to announce the curfew for enslaved people; anyone caught on the streets after the bell without a pass was confined in its cramped cells overnight. The Cage stands as a stark reminder of the repressive social controls and the harsh reality of the colonial justice system in the 19th century. Today, it is one of the most photographed historical landmarks in Montego Bay, representing the bridge between the town's dark past and its present identity as a center of resistance.
