Kavaratti
Kavaratti is the administrative capital and the most developed island of the Lakshadweep archipelago. Despite its status, it remains a tranquil sanctuary of white sand beaches and vast, calm lagoons. The island is famous for its 52 mosques, with the Ujra Mosque being the most prominent, featuring exquisite wood carvings and architecture that reflect the island's unique heritage. The crystal-clear lagoons are a playground for water sports enthusiasts, offering excellent opportunities for kayaking, sailing, and swimming. Kavaratti is also home to a popular Marine Aquarium which showcases a memorable variety of coral and ornamental fish. For a closer look, visitors can take glass-bottom boat rides or indulge in scuba diving to explore the bustling underwater world. The best time to visit is from October to March. Entry to the island is regulated and requires a permit, typically accessed via flight to Agatti followed by a boat or helicopter transfer. As a conservative destination, alcohol is prohibited, and visitors are expected to respect local customs. The cuisine is heavily influenced by Malabar flavors, with coconut and fresh seafood being the stars of every meal.
