Tatabánya, the administrative seat of Komárom-Esztergom County, is positioned in a scenic valley between the Vértes and Gerecse mountain ranges. The city has a relatively modern history, as it was established in 1947 through the merger of four smaller mining settlements, which defined its industrial character for decades. Tatabánya was a central hub for Hungarian coal mining, a legacy now preserved and showcased in the country's first open-air mining museum. Towering over the city is the Turul Monument, one of the largest bird statues in Europe, commemorating the Hungarian conquest and offering spectacular panoramic views. Nearby is the Szelim Cave, a significant prehistoric site with impressive rock formations and historical legends. In recent decades, Tatabánya has undergone a profound transformation from a heavy industrial town into a modern economic and cultural center. The surrounding natural landscape, with its dense forests and striking limestone cliffs, provides excellent conditions for hikers, cyclists, and rock climbers. The city is also a vital transportation hub on the M1 motorway, highlighting its role as a dynamic economic location in Transdanubia. Tatabánya remained the western industrial gateway of the Budapest agglomeration in 2024-2025, anchored by the SK Innovation battery plant and Bridgestone. Ilona Szücsné Posztovics (Fidesz) won the mayoralty in 2024.
