The city has a relatively modern history, as it was established in 1947 through the merger of four smaller mining settlements, which defined its industrial character for decades. Tatabánya was a central hub for Hungarian coal mining, a legacy now preserved and showcased in the country's first open-air mining museum. Towering over the city is the Turul Monument, one of the largest bird statues in Europe, commemorating the Hungarian conquest and offering spectacular panoramic views.
