Tata, also known as the 'City of Waters,' is idyllically set at the foot of the Gerecse Mountains and is renowned for its harmonious blend of nature and history. The centerpiece of the town is the Old Lake (Öreg-tó), which dates back to Roman times and is now one of Europe's most significant bird protection areas. On the lake's shore stands the medieval Tata Castle, built in the 14th century under King Sigismund and later flourishing as a grand Renaissance palace under King Matthias Corvinus. Today, it houses the Kuny Domokos Museum, showcasing local history and significant archaeological finds. Another architectural gem is the Esterházy Palace, a Baroque masterpiece surrounded by one of Hungary's finest English Gardens. Historically, Tata was famous for its numerous water mills, several of which are preserved today as monuments to the town's industrial past. The Fényes Nature Trail gives a unique natural experience, leading visitors on wooden boardwalks through pristine wetlands and warm springs. Every November, the town hosts the 'Wild Goose Festival,' as tens of thousands of geese rest on the lake during migration. Its peaceful atmosphere, historical grandeur, and rich biodiversity make Tata one of the most popular recreational destinations in Transdanubia.
