Habitation du Sud (Haiti)

Weather…

Habitation du Sud was a central agricultural estate in the southern plains of Haiti, located near the city of Les Cayes. It was particularly renowned for its massive indigo production, which was regarded as 'blue gold' during the 18th century. The estate included modern processing facilities, such as large masonry basins for fermenting the indigo plants. The economic significance of this habitation contributed substantially to the region's wealth but required the labor of hundreds of enslaved people. In the post-independence era, the land was subdivided and distributed to former soldiers, fundamentally altering the local social structure. Today, some of the stone fermentation basins and portions of the manor house are still visible. The site serves as a quiet witness to the transition from plantation economy to peasant autonomy. The surrounding fertile soils continue to be used intensively for agriculture today.
