Fria Alumina Plant (Guinea)

Weather…

The Fria Alumina Plant, also known as the Friguia complex, is a landmark in African industrial history. Commissioned in 1960, it was the first facility on the African continent to process locally mined bauxite directly into alumina (aluminum oxide). The town of Fria grew entirely around this plant, evolving into a modern industrial hub. Geographically, the plant is located in Maritime Guinea, approximately 160 kilometers north of Conakry. Today, the facility is operated by the Russian mining giant RUSAL. The complex includes not only the refinery but also its own bauxite mine and a 143-kilometer dedicated railway line connecting the plant to the Port of Conakry. Economically, Fria is of immense value to Guinea as it moves the country up the value chain beyond raw bauxite exports. After a period of closure between 2012 and 2018, the plant was modernized and restarted, providing a critical boost to the local economy. Fria stands as a symbol of Guinea's aspiration to transform from a raw material supplier into an industrial nation, remaining a technological cornerstone of the country's economy.
