Makasutu Cultural Forest (Gambia)

Weather…

Makasutu Cultural Forest is a private ecotourism reserve located on the Mandina Bolong, a tributary of the Gambia River, approximately 5 kilometers from Brikama. The name 'Makasutu' is derived from the Mandinka language, meaning 'sacred forest.' The project was founded in the 1990s by James English and Lawrence Williams to restore a degraded woodland area and establish a model for sustainable tourism. Geographically, the 1,000-acre reserve encompasses five diverse ecosystems, including gallery forest, savannah, and extensive mangrove swamps. Makasutu is home to a variety of wildlife, including baboon troops, monitor lizards, and over 250 bird species. The reserve gives educational insights into traditional Gambian crafts, palm wine tapping, and local medicinal plants. Culturally, the forest is significant as a spiritual sanctuary, often visited by marabouts (Islamic scholars) for religious guidance. The reserve's innovative architecture has won international acclaim for blending modern comforts with traditional African building materials and techniques.
