Furuyar Forest represents a significant ecological reservoir in the Lower River Division of The Gambia. It spans an area characterized by a mixture of tropical dry forest and Guinea savanna woodland. Geologically, the area rests on a base of Tertiary sandstone, with soils rich in iron oxides giving them a characteristic reddish hue. This forest is crucial for maintaining local biodiversity, providing habitat for over 150 documented bird species and various primates. During the rainy season, which lasts from June to October, the forest functions as an important water catchment area and prevents erosion of the loose topsoil. Management of the area is conducted by local communities in collaboration with state forestry departments to halt deforestation and secure sustainable resources. It remains a critical link in the ecological corridor of West Africa, supporting both flora and fauna.

Getting there
The remote forest park in the south is mostly accessible via unpaved dirt tracks, requiring a sturdy vehicle. It is highly recommended to hire a knowledgeable local guide from the nearby coastal towns.
Best season
The dry season, roughly from November to May, provides the best conditions and most accessible pathways. During the wet season, the unpaved access roads often turn into deep mud and become impassable.

The area consists of dense tropical vegetation featuring mostly unpaved, natural trails. The ground can be quite uneven and is frequently intersected by large roots or fallen tree branches.
What to bring
Long trousers and closed, sturdy footwear are important for moving comfortably through the dense undergrowth. Strong insect repellent, sun protection, and plenty of drinking water are essential for this remote area.
Parking
Formal parking facilities do not exist in this natural landscape; vehicles are usually safely left at the edge of the dirt tracks. It is common practice for the driver to wait near the car while you explore the forest.

Due to the extreme remoteness, visitors should never stray from known or marked paths to avoid getting lost. Mindfulness regarding local wildlife and the complete lack of mobile network coverage is advised.
